How to Apply for Medicare

Whether you're turning 65 or qualifying through a disability, applying for Medicare can be easy — if you know where to begin.

Some people are enrolled automatically:

  • If you're already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits when you turn 65
  • If you have a disability and have received SSDI for at least 24 months
  • If you have ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) — you’re enrolled as soon as disability benefits begin

Others need to apply manually, including:

  • People who are turning 65 but not yet receiving Social Security benefits
  • People delaying retirement or new to the U.S. work system

📝 What are you applying for?

  • Part A – Hospital coverage
  • Part B – Medical/outpatient coverage
  • Later, you can also add Part D for prescription drugs or choose a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan

🕒 When to apply?

  • 3 months before your 65th birthday
  • Includes your birthday month
  • Ends 3 months after your birthday month

⏳ Applying late could result in penalties or delayed coverage.
