How to Apply for Medicare

Whether you're turning 65 or qualifying through a disability, applying for Medicare can be easy โ€” if you know where to begin.

Some people are enrolled automatically:

  • If you're already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits when you turn 65
  • If you have a disability and have received SSDI for at least 24 months
  • If you have ALS (Lou Gehrigโ€™s disease) โ€” youโ€™re enrolled as soon as disability benefits begin

Others need to apply manually, including:

  • People who are turning 65 but not yet receiving Social Security benefits
  • People delaying retirement or new to the U.S. work system

  • Part A โ€“ Hospital coverage
  • Part B โ€“ Medical/outpatient coverage
  • Later, you can also add Part D for prescription drugs or choose a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan

  • 3 months before your 65th birthday
  • Includes your birthday month
  • Ends 3 months after your birthday month
